§ 01 — Overview

From Bishkek, around the lake.

You start in Bishkek, visit Burana Tower and drive through spectacular gorges to Cholpon-Ata. On to Karakol, with a side trip to Altyn Arashan and its hot springs. A day trip via Jety-Ögüs, Barskoon and Skazka Canyon to Bokonbaevo — with a traditional eagle-hunting demonstration on the south shore.

To finish, back to Bishkek with stops at Osh Bazaar and Ala-Too Square.

§ 02 — Day by day

The route.

01
Bishkek — Burana — Cholpon-Ata

The first tower of the steppe.

Drive · 265 km · approx. 4 h Hotel

Early departure from Bishkek to the archaeological-architectural complex of Burana Tower (UNESCO). Founded in the 11th century as the minaret of the mosque of Balasagun — then capital of the Karakhanid empire. Museum with Silk Road finds, climb the tower for views over the Chui valley.

Onward through Boom Canyon with its red sandstone formations and along the north shore of Issyk-Kul — the "warm lake" that doesn't freeze even at –20 °C. Archaeologists discovered a 2,500-year-old settlement on its bottom. In Cholpon-Ata you'll visit the prehistoric petroglyphs and the local museum.

Cholpon-Ata — Karakol

Through the alpine gorges, eastward.

Drive · 150 km · approx. 4 h Guesthouse

After breakfast on to the Grigorevka and Semenovka gorges — serene alpine pastures, perfect for a short walk. In Karakol, once the central town of the Turkestan region, a city tour: Russian Orthodox wooden church, Dungan mosque in Chinese style (built without nails), historical museum.

Dinner with a Uyghur family who'll tell you the story of their home. Overnight in a guesthouse run by "Destination Karakol" — a women's cooperative creating jobs in the region.

Karakol — Altyn Arashan

Up to the hot springs by UAZ.

Drive · 50 km · approx. 3 h Guesthouse

Switch into a Soviet UAZ — the road to Altyn Arashan is one of the most adventurous in the country. Switchbacks along the Ak-Suu river, spectacular views of mountains and spruce forests. Lunch up top in alpine surroundings.

Afternoon in the natural hot springs or on foot through the silent valley between massive spruces. Back to Karakol for dinner.

Karakol — Jety Ögüs — Barskoon — Skazka — Bokonbaevo

Seven bulls, the fairy tale, the eagle.

Drive · 170 km · approx. 5 h Yurt

In the morning to the Jety-Ögüs gorge with its red rock formations — "Seven Bulls" and "Broken Heart". Short walk through the lush surroundings. On to Barskoon Gorge with its waterfalls and breathtaking mountain views.

Then to Skazka Canyon, where colourful sandstone shapes evoke castles and mythical creatures. Evening in Bokonbaevo: a captivating eagle-hunting demonstration showcases one of Kyrgyzstan's oldest traditions. Overnight in a yurt on the south shore.

Bokonbaevo — Bishkek

Back to the capital.

Drive · 280 km · 5 – 6 h Hotel

After a restful night, back toward Bishkek. Stop at the bustling Osh Bazaar: spices, textiles, local food, handmade crafts.

On arrival a visit to Ala-Too Square with views of the surrounding mountains and the "White House", the seat of government. Hotel check-in and a closing evening together.
